J2 teams eye giant-killing acts

By Jeremy Walker
TOKYO (April 11)--Japan's second division clubs turn their attentions to giant-killing deeds when the J.League's Nabisco Cup kicks off on Wednesday evening.
All nine ties in the first round first leg see second division opposition trying to get an advantage for the second leg, to be played on April 19.
The tie of the round takes place at Todoroki Stadium, where Kawasaki Frontale entertain Urawa Reds in the first leg.
These teams traded places at the end of last season, with the Reds suffering the embarrassment of relegation and Frontale the exhilaration of winning the second division championship.
Frontale have struggled in the top flight, however, and stand 14th in the 16-team table with only four points from a possible 18.
Reds, on the other hand, have swept all before them in the second division, winning five out of five to lead the pack by three points. The only thing that could stop them was Mount Usu in Hokkaido, which erupted on March 31 and forced the postponement of Urawa's game away to Consadole Sapporo last Sunday.
Even without their national team star Shinji Ono, who is recovering from ankle surgery, the Reds should be too strong for Frontale, especially with a huge and noisy following behind them.
Oita Trinita, who just missed out on the two promotion places last season and are in third place again this time, will also fancy their chances at home to JEF United Ichihara, who are eighth in the first division.
And so will Omiya Ardija, fourth in J2, at home to Vissel Kobe, 10th in J1. Another interesting tie is Shonan Bellmare at home to Avispa Fukuoka at Hiratsuka, where Bellmare's former Olympic team captain Masakiyo Maezono will be keen to prove his worth against top-flight opposition.
With Mount Usu still listed as dangerous, Consadole's home first leg against Gamba has been put back to May 24, and at Sapporo rather than Muroran, where Consadole play their home games in spring because of the harsh winter climate in their hometown.
Shimizu S-Pulse cannot play their first-round games on schedule, either, as they are playing in the Asian Cup Winners Cup in Thailand on April 13 and 15.
Instead, their games against J2 newcomers Mito Hollyhock have been rearranged for June 7 at home and June 14 away.
